Period talk #2 : Dealing with period pains

– LIFESTYLE –

When it comes to that ‘time of the month’ period pains are something that most of the time comes with periods. At times they might not be really bad, but other times they can be so painful. This is my second post in collaboration with TOTM ( Time of The Month ) as i wanted to be involved with their #TalkingPeriods campaign (which launched on the 19th September) I love being able to share stuff with you guys, in the hope that I might be able to help someone. Period talk is something that should be spoke about a lot more, there is no reason why it shouldn’t be spoke about. TOTM are a great brand that supply women with everything that they need for their period and the great thing is, is that their products are 100% cotton.

Each month when I get my period, my period pains will differ each month. Sometimes I get really crappy periods, which comes with BAD period pains and other times they arent as bad. One time I remember, it was really early in the morning maybe like 7 and i just went and sat in the shower with the hot water running as the pain was excruciating.  I have also been really ill a couple of times on my period, where i am actually sick and have really bad stomach and back pains.

HOW DO I DEAL WITH MY PERIOD PAINS?

1. Hot water bottles will become your best friends / microwave heat bags.

Whenever I get bad period pains, the one thing that helps me is a hot water bottle. It makes my stomach feel so much better and because it is hot and warm on my stomach it takes the pain away. I use them at night and sometimes during the day if they are really bad. Heat bags are sort of the same as water bottles, you can get lavender bags that you pop in the microwave and it honestly feels amazing on your stomach (also would be great for nightime)

2. Having nice long hot showers.

This is sort of the same as the hot water bottle. Having a nice hot shower instantly takes the pain away and also it gives you something else to focus on. It is also going to make you feel fresh.

3. Medicine.

I always keep Paracetamol and Ibuprofen with me where ever I go on my period. I know I can take them and they will do their best to take the period pains away.

4. Drinking herbal tea.

I find that if I drink herbal tea such as peppermint tea, cherry and cinnamon tea and camomile tea really helps my period pains. When I drink them, they make me feel really warm inside and they ease the pain a bit.

5. Eating junk food.

Ok this one sounds ridiculous, but I have a good reason for it.. kindaa.. whenever I am on my period I will have maybe one day or a couple of days where I eat rubbish food. Chocolate and ice cream really helps with my period pains and also it makes me feel better, eating crappy food when I am feeling crappy is great for comfort food. You deserve to eat crappy to make yourself feel better. Honestly, it does help.

5. Try not to exercise as much.

I find that exercising while being on my period hurts even more and sometimes brings on the stomach pains. While you are going through this time of the month, you need to relax and take it easy. You don’t want to be working your ass off at the gym, not only will you not feel great for doing it but you could bring on your stomach cramps even more.

These are just a couple of ways in which I deal with my period pains. If your period pains are really bad you can look at going to see a doctor and maybe going on the pill to control your periods. There are a lot of options when it comes to dealing with your period pains. I hope this post has helped you in some way.

How do you deal with your period pains? what is your advice?

  1. I’ve always tried to stay away from junk food right before and during my period just because it makes me feel even worse, but I always get a large stock of fancy dark chocolate and treat myself to that! I also start consuming a lot of ginger before my period starts and I’ve noticed that makes it lighter and less painful. It’s made such a positive difference for me. I usually stick with ginger tea or super-spicy chai.

  2. These are all such great tips! I find that having a hot shower and eating crappy foods always helps me in particular, yet paradoxically going to the gym makes the pain better – although it does depend on the exercises I do and I usually just stick to some light cardio and movements which do not put too much pressure on my back.
Thank you so much for sharing! xox
